    Personally I think that Comodo has the best software firewall for windows.

    Avast!Free is a solid free anti virus

    Bitdefener, Kspersky, and Malwarebytes are paid solutions you should look into though.

    But in general all firewalls function the same way.

    For best security though, you should have your computer behind both a proxy firewall and an IPS (or at least one).

    You can also get a router for about $50 that has an SPI firewall which is extremely useful in keeping all computers on your home network secure while they need to go online and receive upgrade patches.

    Comodo is best and free. And one can also use inbult system firewall such as in XP/Vista/Win7/Fedora/Ubantu.
