The word Hindu is a secular word by origin. It is derived from the word Sindhu, which is the name of a major river that flows in Indian subcontinent. The ancient Greeks and Armenians used to refer the people living beyond the river Sindhu as Hindus as they had difficulty in pronouncing letter 'S'. When the Muslims came to the sub continent they called the people living in the region as Hindustanis to distinguish them from the foreign Muslims. Subsequently when the British established their rule, they started calling the local religions collectively under the name of Hinduism.

It is derived from the word Sindhu, it is not true because this word is taken from Arabic that was HIND. in Arabic History and literature it is mentioned and that language Arabic is very old, so from Hind it become Hindu. that means a person who belongs to HIND and HIND is INDIA in Arabic

Untill foreigners invaded Sindu region the people there followed SanatanaDharma(Now being called Hinduism). And the people who followed this SanatanaDharma were Sindus, who were later called as Hindus.
